What is Battery cycle life?

Battery cycle life is defined as the number of complete charge - discharge cycles a battery can perform before its nominal capacity falls below 80% of its initial rated capacity. Different types of batteries have different cycle life, LiFePO4 batteries life time of 2000cycles are typical.

What is depth of discharge (DOD)?

The Depth of Discharge (DOD) is a measure of how deeply a battery is discharged. When a battery is 100% full, then the DOD is 0%. Conversely, when a battery is 100% empty, the DOD is 100%. The deeper batteries are discharged on average, the shorter their so-called cycle life.

What is state of charge (SOC)?

The State of Charge describes how full a battery is. The exact voltage to battery charge correlation is dependent on the temperature of the battery. Cold batteries will show a lower voltage when full than hot batteries. This is one of the reasons why quality alternator regulators or high-powered charging systems use temperature probes on batteries.

What is single cell?

LiFePO4 battery packs all assembled from single cells, the voltage of cell is from about 3.65 volts when full to about 2.0 volts when empty. Cells have been parallel configed to increase capacity, which are called "unit", and then units will be connected in series to make battery pack in order to increase voltage. The capacity of single cell decided the numbers of cells in battery pack.

What is self-discharge rate?

The self-discharge rate is a measure of how much batteries discharge on their own. The Self-Discharge rate is governed by the construction of the battery and the metallurgy of the lead used inside. Different types of batteries have different self-discharge rate.

What is a MilliAmp Hour (MAH)?

MilliAmp Hour means how much current a battery will discharge over a period of one hour. Higher numbers here reflect a long battery runtime and or higher storage capacity. Higher MAH ratings do not necessarily reflect on speed but more on runtime. For example a 2000 mAh pack will sustain a 2000 milli amp (2 amp) draw for one hour before dropping to a voltage level that is considered discharged. A 1700 will sustain a 1700 mAh (1.7 amp) draw for one hour. 1000 mAH is equal to a 1 Amp Hour (AH) rating.
